Starfish is the common nickname for Sea Stars, those amazing creatures that have filled many niches in the ocean through adaptation, numbering over 2000 species. Perhaps their most useful skill is the ability to regrow lost limbs.
History: Early Starfish appeared in the Ordovician period over 450 million years ago. They joined seas already teaming with life in a warm, wet world with no ice - Earth had just two supercontinents at the time, and sea levels were much higher due to the lack of ice caps. However, a 20-million-year freeze at the end of the period wiped out about half the creatures of the sea, leaving Sea Stars among the survivors.
Scientific Name: Asterias rubens
Characteristics: They may look like rocks or shells, but Sea Stars are living creatures. These soft figures could be added to your ocean diorama or art project, or they could spend time in an aquarium.
Size: These Starfish miniature figures have additional realism with small bumps covering the surface. They are about the size of a large button, about an inch across.
